A Guide to Finding Employment for Adults with Disabilities

Adults with Disabilities Working Together

At Eggleston, we believe in empowering citizens at work, at home, and in the community. That is why we have spent the past 65 years providing education, training, and employment for persons with disabilities. Even with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), many adults with disabilities have difficulty finding or keeping employment. Thankfully, Eggleston is here to help serve our community through employment, residential, and support services.

Eggleston’s Community Employment For Disabled Adults Program

One of the main ways that Eggleston provides disability employment services in Hampton Roads, is through our community employment program. The first step for this program is getting a referral to our resources. Then, our team will help find and place adults with disabilities in a suitable work environment.

Getting a Referral

A referral for our community employment program must come from one of three places: the Virginia Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), the Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI), or the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). These state agencies assist individuals with disabilities by helping them find work. In order to participate in our community employment program, you must receive a referral from one of these agencies. This can help individuals find jobs for physically disabled adults. Visit your local office in order to find out how you can receive a referral.

Finding Jobs for Adults with Disabilities

Once you have received your referral, Eggleston’s staff of experienced specialists provide one-on-one support. Through situational assessment, job development, job placement and training, and follow-along support, each individual client can reach their goal of obtaining employment.

The goal of situational assessment is to get a better understanding of what type of job the individual would enjoy and be able to perform. With job development, the staff member helps prepare the individual for job expectations and the interview process. Through placement and proper job training for disabled adults, individuals are placed in jobs and supported by staff members in performing their duties. Once the individual is more comfortable in their job setting, they will receive follow-along support and have someone to turn to if needed.
